Educator: Uncle Americo Villalon, winner Fondart 2010. Next Exhibition at the Plaza Poeta Vicente hudobro Cartagena
The tondo (tandi in plural) is a pictorial composition that is made of disk-shaped, not rectangular as is traditional. The term comes from Italian Rotondo, "round."
The tandi were created in antiquity, such as abundant in the red-figure Greek pottery, especially at the bottom of the cups kylix calls (from which comes the word "cup"). It contains one of these cups with the portrait of Menander, Greek playwright fourth century C., placed in a circular composition.
But during the Renaissance when reached its peak, in vogue since it reintroduced the Italian painters, above all to rediscover Roman clipeata imago. In the sixteenth century, the pictorial style of istoriato for majolica decoration was applied to large circular ceramic.
